PhD Application Process
In order to do a preliminary evaluation of your application, we need the following information about you. So in the first instance please send an email to either the Director, Professor Max Coltheart or the Deputy Director, Professor Stephen Crain, that provides this information.
Following this initial evaluation, you must then follow the University's PhD application process. More information about this process is available from the Higher Degree Research office.
Undergraduate education
- Copy of academic transcript of course results for each year of undergraduate study
- Any prizes/awards
- If your undergraduate degree included an Honours year, please let us know how many students there were in your Honours class, how many First Class Honours were awarded in your year, what your ranking/position was in your Honours class, and the title of your thesis.
- If you are from the United States, we need a copy of your Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores
Postgraduate education (if you have done any)
- Copy of academic transcript of course results
- If your postgraduate course included a research component, please tell us what % of the programme was that component, what the thesis word length was, what the number of thesis examiners was, and what standard you achieved in the thesis work.
Publications
- If you have any published papers or abstracts, please provide full references to these.
Presentations
- If you have made any oral or poster presentations at conferences or other such venues, please provide details.
Any other research experience (including acting as a research assistant)
- Please indicate type of work, duration of position and relevance to proposed PhD research.
Writing samples
- This could be three brief essays, research paper, or short thesis (around 5000 words) that you have done during your studies

Proposed PhD research
- The areas of research in which our Centre is involved, and the specific research interests of the researchers at the Centre, are described on the MACCS website. Which area or areas of research are of interest to you and which researchers might you like as potential PhD supervisors?
