Profile
Jonathan Harrington completed an undergraduate course in Modern and Medieval Languages at Cambridge University in 1981 and a PhD in Phonetics in the Department of Linguistics, Cambridge University in 1986. He was a full-time lecturer in experimental phonetics in the Dept. of Linguistics Edinburgh University from 1983-4 and then a full-time post-doctoral research fellow in the Centre for Speech Technology Research, Edinburgh University from 1984-89. He joined the Dept of Linguistics, Macquarie University in October 1989 as a Senior Lecturer. He was Department Head from 1997-9. He was a member of the Cognitive Science and Social Science & Humanities panels of the Australian Research Council from 1993-1994 and co-founded the Australian National Speech Database Committee which produced (from 1991-5) the Australian National Database of Spoken Language (ANDOSL) with ARC infrastructure funding. He was Director of Macquarie University's Speech Hearing and Language Research Centre (SHLRC) from 1990 to 2001, and Deputy Director of the Macquarie Centre for Cognitive Science from 2000 to 2001. In 2001 he was appointed Professorial Fellow at Macquarie University.
Late 2001, Jonathan Harrington took up the position as Professor and Chair at the Institute for Phonetics and Digital Signal Processing at the University of Kiel in Germany.
Jonathan Harrington is currently Professor of Phonetics and Digital Speech Processing and Director of the IPS, University of Munich. He joined the Institute of Phonetics at the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich in October 2006.
His research interests are in experimental phonetics, laboratory phonology, speech database development, and sound change.
