GPC Strength Calculator

About:

This page can be used to find various measures of the GPC strength of words and nonwords based on the rules used in producing their regular pronunciation.

Note that output rules and the silent-H rule do not have strength ratings. These rules are disregarded in the calculation of strengths.

Grapheme-phoneme correspondences for items are those generated by DRC version 1.2.1, with DRC English version 1.1.7.

Position Relevance:

Position independant
(A)arr-># = (e)arr->#

Summed frequencies or word counts for the GPCs are calculated without taking into account the position-of-applicability. Two GPCs with the same letters and phoneme(s) will have the same summed frequency or word count, even if their position-of-applicability differs.

Position specific
(A)arr-># ≠ (e)arr->#

The position-of-applicability of each GPC is taken into account when calculating the summed frequencies or word counts. Two GPCs with the same letters and phoneme(s), but different positions-of-applicability, will have different summed frequencies. Note that GPC rule order takes precedence over position-of-applicability, so, for example, a rule with end-of-word applicability is not necessarily used in all cases in which that rule's letters appear at the end of a word.

Measure:

Summed Frequency (Scaled)

The strength of each GPC (before scaling) is determined by summing the written frequencies of the words that contain it. The sum, mean and standard-deviation of scaled GPC strengths will be reported for each word.

Strengths will be scaled so that they fall between the minimum strength value below, and 1.0.

Minimum GPC strength value:

Type Frequency

The strength of each GPC is determined by counting the number of words that contain it. The sum, mean and standard-deviation of GPC strengths will be reported for each word.

Log10 Type Frequency

The strength of each GPC is determined by taking the base-10 logarithm of the number of words that contain it. The sum, mean and standard-deviation of GPC strengths will be reported for each word.

Note: 1 is added to the word count for each GPC so that GPCs that are not used in any words still get a meaningful result.

Strength of Weakest Rule

The strength of each GPC is determined by counting the number of words that contain it. The strength for a word is equal to the strength of the weakest GPC rule it uses.

Log10 Strength of Weakest Rule

The strength of each GPC is determined by taking the base-10 logarithm of the number of words that contain it. The strength for a word is equal to the strength of the weakest GPC rule it uses.

Note: 1 is added to the word count for each GPC so that GPCs that are not used in any words still get a meaningful result.
